CNN —Flash flooding that has ravaged northern Afghanistan in recent days has killed at least 200 people, UN agency the International Organization for Migration (IOM) told CNN Saturday. An Afghan man walks near his damaged home after heavy flooding in Baghlan province Saturday. Afghan men shovel mud from a house following flash floods. The flash floods add to a string of recent natural disasters that the region has had to endure. Flash floods also swept away dozens in Afghanistan in July, less than three months before thousands were killed by a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the western part of the country.

A recession by early next year could send stocks down 30%, says BCA strategist Roukaya Ibrahim. AdvertisementThere are two factors signaling a recession by year-end or early 2025, and a downturn could spark a 30% correction in stocks, according to BCA strategist Roukaya Ibrahim. "But eventually, the unemployment rate is going to take higher and that's going to lead to concerns about a recession." Ibrahim isn't alone in calling a recession and a steep plunge in the stock market. Wall Street veteran Gary Shilling, known for predicting the mid-2000s mortgage bubble, is also forecasting a 30% stock market crash by the end of this year, with a recession likely to crush speculative bets that have piled up in recent years.

Biden faces widening partisan split over Israel

CNN —President Joe Biden is facing more critical moments this week that will test his fraught relationship with his base over Israel’s war in Gaza and potentially widen the partisan split about the Jewish state that has been building for years. Against this backdrop, partisan polarization about Israel among American voters was already widening years before the brutal Hamas attack last October and the devastating Israeli response it triggered. An array of polls this spring show how the war in Gaza has hardened this partisan split. Nearly half of Democrats, but only a little over one-fifth of Republicans in the CBS poll, said the US should pressure Israel to stop the fighting. “Biden has a Democratic caucus that is putting a lot of faith in this process,” she said.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan hopes to convince U.S. tech firms to invest more in London. Sadiq Khan was re-elected as London's mayor, final results showed on Saturday, helping to cement the Labour Party's commanding lead over the governing Conservatives in local elections ahead of Britain's national vote later this year. For Labour, London is the latest of a number of councils and mayoralties it has won in the local elections, which took place on Thursday, inflicting heavy losses on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservatives. Opinion polls predict that Labour will win the next national election, propelling its leader Keir Starmer to power and ending 14 years of Conservative government in Britain. Khan, 53, who became the first Muslim mayor of the British capital in 2016, has pledged to build more social housing and work with a future national Labour government to boost police capacity.

Enter the closed-end fund, a relative of the traditional, open-end mutual fund. Gundlach highlighted closed-end funds on CNBC's " Closing Bell " Wednesday afternoon, noting that it's "a pretty good environment for moderate risk assets." "For retail investors, closed-end funds have gone back to trading at discounts broadly, and with some leverage involved there, there's double-digit yields available without taking a ton of credit risk," he said. Searching for discounts Drivers of these closed-end fund discounts, particularly those that hold bonds, include sharp spikes in yields. The Abrdn National Municipal Income Fund (VFL) , for instance, is trading at a 15% discount to its net asset value, according to Nuveen's CEF Connect, a database of closed-end funds.

CNN —Close flybys of Io, one of Jupiter’s moons and the most volcanically active world in our solar system, have revealed a lava lake and a towering feature called “Steeple Mountain” on the moon’s alien surface. “We also got some great close-ups and other data on a 200-kilometer-long (127-mile-long) lava lake called Loki Patera. Bitcoin miners brace for impact as halving goes live

The technical event is relatively simple: Bitcoin miners get paid in bitcoin to validate transactions, and after 210,000 blocks of transactions are computed and added to the main chain, the reward given to the miners securing bitcoin is 'halved.' The aggregate market cap of the 14 U.S.-listed bitcoin miners tracked by JPMorgan analysts declined 28% over the first half of April to $14.2 billion, reaching year-to-date lows. Some have billed the 2024 bitcoin halving as a seminal moment for the mining sector. Marathon, along with other mining firms, has begun diversifying its business model into ancillary operations beyond purely bitcoin mining. Sullivan continued, "Bitcoin mining sites can only be repurposed if they meet the attributes that are required for HPC.

A far-right party emerged on Thursday as a potential kingmaker in Croatia after the governing conservatives finished first in a bitterly contested parliamentary election but fell short of winning enough seats to form a new government. The HDZ, led by the incumbent Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, won 61 seats in the 151-member legislature, according to the near-final official tally. That was more than all its rivals, including Rivers of Justice, a left-leaning coalition formed by President Zoran Milanovic, which won 42 seats to finish second. The far-right Homeland Movement finished third with 13 seats. Speaking early Thursday in Zagreb, the Croatian capital, Mr. Plenkovic said his party had “convincingly won” but acknowledged that he would need help from rival groups to form a government and secure a third term as prime minister.

Across the country, from Denver and Seattle to Washington, DC, and New York, cities are deciphering whether to slash their budgets. (Most states' fiscal years run from July 1 to June 30.) States and cities are facing pressure from societal issues that will weigh on tax revenue and increase costs for years to come. Aging populations mean a smaller percentage of the population that's of working age, putting downward pressure on tax revenue. But as federal funds have petered out, structural problems have resurfaced.

But, if you’re President Joe Biden, now is a particularly bad time for inflation to reaccelerate. On the other hand, bad economic data, especially regarding inflation, almost certainly guarantees people aren’t going to be feeling better about the economy. Significant progress over the past two years in getting inflation down from multi-decade highs has been of little help to struggling Americans. “We have more to do to lower costs for hardworking families,” he said. The shelter index, a broader component of the inflation report that covers a majority of housing expenses, is up 5.7% year-over-year.

Was that a change in the market's character last week, or is it still the same old bull? This is generally to the good, as boring markets are bullish markets while they remain that way. Rates and commodities worries Other asset markets have also been at least inviting the question about a potential shift in character. The good news on this, as I keep insisting, is that it hasn't been a truly Fed-driven market. Though it's easy to imagine the market chafing at this kind of higher-rate, higher-growth equilibrium if it continues too much longer.

AI is emerging “as a great disruptor in the world of work,” Denis Machuel, chief executive of Adecco Group, said in a statement. Some 46% of executives said they would redeploy employees internally if their jobs were impacted by AI. Responses from more than 800 global companies showed that a quarter of them expected AI to cause job losses, while half thought the technology would create new jobs. The WEF said employers expected most technologies, including AI, to be “a net positive” for jobs over the following five years. Still, that offers little consolation to the workers AI has already helped push out.
